Abbas was taken captive on the day of Badr, and he ransomed himself for forty ounces of gold. When this verse was revealed, Abbas said, "Allah has granted me two blessings I would not exchange for the world. I was captured on the day of Badr and ransomed myself for forty ounces of gold, then Allah gave me forty slaves in return, and I still hope for the forgiveness that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has promised us."
في قوله تعالى: {يأيها النبي قل لمن في أيديكم من الأسري} الآية،
وكان العباس أسر يوم بدر، فافتدى نفسه بأربعين أوقية من ذهب، فقال العباس حين نزلت هذه الآية: لقد أعطاني الله خصلتين، ما أحب أن لي بهما الدنيا أني أسرت يوم بدر، ففديت نفسي بأربعين أوقية ذهبا، فأتاني أربعين عبدا، وأنا أرجو المغفرة التي وعدنا الله عزوجل.

Ibn Jareer narrated it in his Tafsir (11/285–286), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (5/1737), and Bayhaqi in Dalail (3/143), all of them through the route of Abdullah bin Salih, who said, "Muawiya bin Salih narrated to me, from Ali bin Abu Talha, from Ibn Abbas," and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Ali bin Abu Talha, and although he transmits from Ibn Abbas without a direct link, the intermediary is known and he is truthful.
