The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer facing a camel taken from the spoils of war. When he had finished with the closing salutation, he plucked a single hair from the camel's side and said, "Nothing of your spoils is lawful for me, not even the like of this, except the fifth, and the fifth itself is returned to you."
صلى بنا رسول الله ﷺ إلى بعير من المغنم، فلما سلم أخذ وبرة من جنب البعير، ثم قال: ولا يحل لى من غنائمكم مثل هذا إلا الخمس، والخمس مردود فيكم.
Reported by Abu Dawud (2755), and from his route by Bayhaqi (6/339), from Walid bin Utbah, who said, Walid (that is, Ibn Muslim) narrated to us, Abdullah bin Ala narrated to us, that he heard Abu Salam Aswad say, I heard Ibn Abasah say, and then he related it. Hakim also reported it (3/616–617) through Muhammad bin Shuayb bin Shabur, from Abdullah bin Ala, with the same wording, and he passed over it in silence. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but he has explicitly stated hearing it at every level of the chain. His statement, "and the near relative" [Anfal 8:41].
