The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Time will draw near, knowledge will be taken away, tribulations will appear, miserliness will be cast into hearts, and harj will increase."They asked, "What is harj?"He replied, "Killing."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: يتقارب الزمان ويقبض العلم، وتظهر الفتن، ويلقى الشح، ويكثر الهرج. قالوا: وما الهرج؟ قال: القتل
Bukhari related it in the Book of Knowledge (85), and Muslim also in the Book of Knowledge (157), both through Zuhri, who said, Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf told me that Abu Hurairah said, and he then narrated it. The wording given is Muslim's. In Bukhari's wording, it was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is chaos?" So he gestured with his hand like this, turning it, as if meaning killing. This is why Bukhari titled the chapter, "Chapter on one who answers a legal question with a gesture of the head and hand."The tafsir of "the withdrawal of knowledge" has also been reported on the authority of Umar bin Khattab, in Bazzar. Bazzar related this hadith (236, Kashf) through another route from Abu Hurairah, narrating something similar, and at the end of it he said, Umar, upon hearing Abu Hurairah relate this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said, "As for the withdrawal of knowledge, it is not something taken away from men's hearts, rather it is the passing away of the scholars."
