The polytheists used to circle the Kabah saying, "Here we are, here we are, You have no partner."The Prophet ﷺ would say, "Enough, enough."But they would continue, "Except a partner who is Yours. You own him and whatever he owns." They would also say, "Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness."So Allah revealed, "But Allah would not punish them while you were among them, and Allah would not punish them while they sought forgiveness" [Anfal 8:33].Ibn Abbas said, "They had two sources of safety, the Prophet of Allah and seeking forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ departed, and what remained was seeking forgiveness."Then "But why should Allah not punish them when they bar people from the Sacred Mosque, and they are not its rightful guardians? Its rightful guardians are only the God-fearing, but most of them do not know" [Anfal 8:34].Ibn Abbas said, "This refers to the punishment of the Hereafter, and the former refers to the punishment of this world."
Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (11/150-151), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (5/1691), and Bayhaqi (5/45-46), all of them through various routes from Abu Huzaifa Musa bin Masud, who said, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, from Abu Zumayl Simak Hanafi, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abu Huzaifa Musa bin Masud Nahdi and Abu Zumayl Simak Hanafi, for both of them are hasan narrators in hadith.
