The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a line for us and said, "This is the path of Allah." Then he drew other lines to its right and to its left and said, "These are other paths, and on each one of them stands a devil calling people to it." Then he recited, "And this is My path, straight, so follow it, and do not follow the other ways, lest you be scattered away from His path" [Anam 6:153].
خط لنا رسول الله ﷺ خطا، ثم قال: هذا سبيل الله، ثم خط خطوطا عن يمينه وعن شماله، ثم قال: هذه سبل، على كل سبيل منها شيطان يدعو إليه، ثم قرأ {وان هذا صراطي مستقيما فاتبعوه ولا تتبعوا السبل فتفرق بكم عن سبيله}
Ahmad (4142) narrated it, as did Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2210), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (6), as did Hakim (2/318), all of them through the route of Hammad bin Zayd, from Asim bin Abu Najud, from Abu Waail, from Abdullah bin Masud, who related it.Its chain is hasan because of Asim bin Abu Najud, since there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan.Nasai narrated it in his tafsir (11175), and Hakim graded it sahih (2/239), from Asim, from Zirr, from Abdullah bin Masud, with the same wording, as a raised report. Both routes are preserved. Asim has two teachers for this hadith, Zirr and Abu Waail, both of them narrating from Ibn Masud.
