The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon and said, "People, you will be gathered before Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised." Then he recited, "On the Day when We shall roll up the heaven like a scroll rolled for books. As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it. A promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We shall do it" [Anbiya 21:104], to the end of the verse. Then he said, "Know that the first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Ibrahim. And know that men from my community will be brought forward, and they will be taken off to the left. I will say, 'My Lord, my companions!' It will be said, 'You do not know what they did after you were gone.' So I will say what the righteous servant said, "And I was a witness over them as long as I remained among them, but when You took me, You were the Watcher over them, and You are Witness over all things" [Maidah 5:117]. Then it will be said, 'These people have been turning back on their heels ever since you parted from them.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4625), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Paradise, Its Delights and Its People (56:2860), both through the route of Shuba, who said, Mughira bin Numan informed us, he said, I heard Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, and he then related it. The wording given is that of Bukhari. This hadith contains clear evidence that the divinity ascribed to the Messiah within Christianity arose after the Messiah was raised up, and that he himself never claimed divinity at all. His statement, "If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise", shows a complete submission of the whole matter to Allah
. As for his words, "and if You forgive them", if this contains a request for their forgiveness, that stems from the gentle nature of Isa
, though he still entrusted the matter entirely to Allah
. This is why the verse concludes with, "You are the Mighty, the Wise".This resembles the Prophet's ﷺ seeking permission from his Lord to ask forgiveness for his mother, out of tenderness toward her, though he was not granted permission to do so. This is because Allah
has decreed concerning Himself, "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him in worship, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills" [Nisa 4:48]. And Allah
concluded that verse with the words, "You are the Mighty, the Wise".The word "the Mighty" is an allusion to the power of Allah, should He wish to grant forgiveness. The word "the Wise" is an allusion to the fact that all of Allah's
affairs are never devoid of wisdom. So the withholding of forgiveness from those who commit polytheism, and the granting of forgiveness to others who fulfill all the conditions for it, both trace back to His power and His wisdom
, for He does whatever He wills.
