Imam Ahmad (17165) narrated it from Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith, who said, Malik bin Mughul narrated to us, Ali bin Mudrak narrated to us, from Abu Amir Ashari, who said, and then he related it. Its isnad is sahih.Haythami said in al-Majma (7/19), "Ahmad narrated it, and its men are trustworthy, except that I did not find that Ali bin Mudrak heard from any of the companions."I say, it is not as Haythami said. Ali bin Mudrak is the Nakhai, the Kufan. He saw Abu Ayub Ansari and heard from him the hadith about wiping over the leather socks, as Imam Ahmad narrated it (23574) with a sahih isnad. In it, he said, "I saw Abu Ayub take off his leather socks, and they looked at him, so he said, 'I did indeed see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wipe over them, but I have come to love wudu.'" This is documented in its proper place.Ibn Hibban gave him an entry in al-Thiqat, saying, "His kunya was Abu Mudrak. He heard from Abu Masud, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Shuba bin Hajjaj narrated from him. He died in the year one hundred and twenty."Abu Ayub Ansari is Khalid bin Zayd bin Kulayb, one of the senior companions, who died in the year fifty or after it.Abu Amir Ashari's name was Abdullah, though it is also said to have been Ubayd, son of Hani or son of Wahb. He died during the caliphate of Abdul-Malik bin Marwan. The period of Abdul-Malik bin Marwan's caliphate ran from the year 73 AH to the year 86 AH, so there is nothing strange about Ali bin Mudrak having met Abu Amir Ashari. There is no break in the chain, since he did indeed meet and hear from those who died before him, such as Abu Ayub Ansari and Abu Masud .
