Abu Amir reported,

A man among them had been killed at Awtas, so the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Abu Amir, why did you not change the situation?"He recited this verse, "You who believe, take care of your own souls. The one who has gone astray cannot harm you if you are rightly guided" [Maidah 5:105].The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, "Where have you gone with this? It only means, 'You who believe, the one who has gone astray among the disbelievers cannot harm you if you are rightly guided.'"
