The Prophet ﷺ said, "The hypocrite is like a sheep wandering confused between two flocks, going to one flock at one time and to the other at another time."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: مثل المنافق كمثل الشاة العائرة بين الغنمين، تعير إلى هذه مرة، وإلى هذه مرة.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on the characteristics of the hypocrites (2784), through several routes from Ubaydullah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, as mentioned above. His saying "tair" means to waver back and forth and go about aimlessly. As for the words of Allah, the Exalted, "belonging neither to these nor to those" [Nisa 4:143], Mujahid said, "Neither to the companions of Muhammad, nor to those Jews."
