This verse was revealed, "Indeed, those whom the angels take in death while wronging themselves" [Nisa 4:97]. There was a man in Mecca called Damra from the tribe of Banu Bakr who was ill. He said to his family, "Take me out of Mecca, for I am suffering from the heat."They asked, "Where shall we take you?"He gestured with his hand toward Medina. Then this verse was revealed, "And whoever emigrates for the cause of Allah will find on the earth..." [Nisa 4:100], to the end of the verse.
نزلت هذه الآية: {ان الذين توفىهم الملىكة ظالمي انفسهم} كان بمكة رجل يقال له ضمرة من بني بكر، وكان مريضا فقال لأهله: أخرجوني من مكة، فإني أجد الحر. فقالوا: أين نخرجك؟ فأشار بيده نحو المدينة فنزلت هذه الآية: {ومن يهاجر في سبيل الله يجد في الأرض} إلى آخر الآية.

Ibn Abu Hatim narrated it in his Tafsir (3/1050) from Ahmad bin Mansur Ramadi, who said, Abu Ahmad Zubayri narrated to us, who said, Muhammad bin Sharik narrated to us, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it, and its isnad is sahih.Ibn Jareer Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (7/381) with this same isnad, and his wording is longer, but it does not contain the story of Damra bin Bakr.Abu Yaala (2679), Tabarani in al-Kabir (11/272), and Ibn Abu Hatim all narrated it through another route, from Ashath, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, who said, "Damra bin Jundab set out toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he died along the way before reaching Madinah, so this verse was revealed, "And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and is then overtaken by death, his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah" [Nisa 4:100]."Ashath is Sawwar Kindi, the carpenter, and he is daif by the unanimous agreement of the scholars.
