When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah and the people had settled, he went out until he came to the House and circled it seven times on his mount, touching the corner with a staff he held in his hand.When he finished his circumambulation, he called for Uthman bin Talha and took from him the key to the Kaabah. It was opened for him, and he entered it. Inside he found a wooden dove, which he broke with his hand and threw away. Then he stood at the door of the Kaabah while the people had gathered closely around him in the mosque.Afterwards, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down in the mosque, and Ali bin Abu Talib came to him with the key of the Kaabah in his hand and said, "Messenger of Allah, may Allah's blessings be upon you, grant us the custodianship of the Kaabah along with the duty of providing water to the pilgrims."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Where is Uthman bin Talha?"Uthman was called for him, and the Prophet said, "Here is your key, Uthman. Today is a day of righteousness and faithfulness."
أن رسول الله ﷺ لما نزل مكة، واطمأن الناس، خرج حتى جاء البيت فطاف به سبعا على راحلته، يستلم الركن بمحجن في يده، فلما قضى طوافه دعا عثمان بن طلحة، فأخذ منه مفتاح الكعبة، ففتحت له، فدخلها، فوجد فيها حمامة من عيدان، فكسرها بيده، ثم طرحها، ثم وقف على باب الكعبة، وقد استكف له الناس في المسجد. ثم جلس رسول الله ﷺ في المسجد، فقام إليه علي بن أبي طالب ومفتاح الكعبة في يده، فقال: يا رسول الله، اجمع لنا الحجابة مع السقاية صلى الله عليك، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أين عثمان بن طلحة؟ فدعي له فقال: هاك مفتاحك يا عثمان، اليوم يوم بر ووفاء.
Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated it, in Sirah by Ibn Hisham (4/112), saying, "Muhammad bin Jafar bin Zubayr told me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Abu Thawr, from Safiya bint Shayba," and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq.Similar in meaning is what Ibn Jareer Tabari narrated in his tafsir (7/170), "Qasim told us, saying, Husayn told us, saying, Hajjaj told me, from Ibn Jurayj," regarding His saying, "Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due" [Nisa 4:58]. He said, it was revealed concerning Uthman bin Talha, from whom the Prophet ﷺ took the key of the Kaaba, and he entered the House with it on the day of the conquest. Then he came out reciting this verse, and he called Uthman to him and handed the key back to him. He said, and Umar bin Khattab said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out reciting this verse, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! I had never heard him recite it before that!"Husayn here is Sunayd, the author of the tafsir, and he is daif according to most scholars of hadith. Hajjaj is Ibn Muhammad Masissi. Sunayd used to prompt his teacher after his memory had deteriorated. The continuation of the verse reads, "and Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing" [Nisa 4:58].
