Amr bin As reported,

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him on the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil, Amr said, "I had a wet dream on an extremely cold night, and I feared that if I bathed I would perish, so I performed tayammum and then led my companions in the dawn prayer."When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I mentioned that to him.He asked, "Amr, did you lead your companions in prayer while you were in a state of major impurity?"I replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah. I had a wet dream on an extremely cold night, and I feared that if I bathed I would perish, so I remembered the words of Allah عز وجل , 'And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is ever Merciful to you' [Nisa 4:29]. So I performed tayammum and then prayed."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said nothing.

عن عمرو بن العاص أنه قال

لما بعثه رسول الله ﷺ عام ذات السلاسل قال: فاحتلمت في ليلة باردة شديدة البرد، فأشفقت إن اغتسلت أن أهلك، فتيممت، ثم صليت بأصحابي صلاة الصبح. قال: فلما قدمنا على رسول الله ﷺ ذكرت ذلك له، فقال: يا عمرو، صليت بأصحابك وأنت جنب؟ قلت: نعم يا رسول الله، إني احتلمت في ليلة باردة شديدة البرد، فأشفقت إن اغتسلت أن أهلك، وذكرت قول الله عز وجل: {ولا تقتلوا أنفسكم إن الله كان بكم رحيما} فتيممت ثم صليت. فضحك رسول الله ﷺ ولم يقل شيئا.

Zia-ur-Rahman Azami

Abu Dawud (334), Ahmad (17812), and Hakim (1/177-178) all narrated it from the hadith of Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Imran bin Abu Anas, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr, from Amr bin As, as mentioned. Its isnad is sahih.Abu Dawud and others also narrated it, adding between Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr and Amr bin As the name "Abu Qays, the freed slave of Amr bin As," and both versions are sahih.Ibn Mardawayh narrated it through another route from Ibn Abbas, that Amr bin As led the people in prayer while in a state requiring ritual purification (janabah). When they came before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they mentioned this to him. He summoned Amr and asked him about it, and Amr said, "Messenger of Allah, I feared that the cold would kill me, and Allah Most High has said, "Do not kill yourselves, for Allah is indeed merciful to you" [Nisa 4:29]." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said nothing in response to him.As for His saying, "Whoever does that in transgression and injustice, We shall cast him into a fire" [Nisa 4:30], Allah Most High is warning that whoever kills himself in transgression and injustice will be made to enter a fire, and this has come in the sahih.
