The people were performing tawaf around the House while Ibn Abbas sat nearby with a hooked staff beside him. He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "You who believe, be mindful of Allah as is His due, and do not die except as Muslims" [Al Imran 3:102], and then said, "If a single drop of Zaqqum were to fall, it would embitter the whole livelihood of the people of the earth. So what of those who have no food but Zaqqum?"
أن الناس كانوا يطوفون بالبيت، وابن عباس جالس معه محجن، فقال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: {ياأيها الذين ءامنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا أنتم مسلمون} ولو أن قطرة من الزقوم قطرت، لأمرت على أهل الأرض عيشهم، فكيف من ليس لهم طعام إلا الزقوم.
Tirmidhi (2585), Ibn Majah (4325), Ahmad (2735), and Ibn Abu Hatim (7233) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7470) and Hakim (2/294) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Shubah, who said, I heard Sulayman Amash narrate from Mujahid, who said, then he related it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih."
