Ubayd bin Umayr reported,

One day Umar asked the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, "Concerning what do you think this verse was revealed, "Would any of you like to have a garden" [Baqarah 2:266]?"They replied, "Allah knows best."Umar became angry and said, "Say either that you know or that you do not know."Ibn Abbas said, "I have something in mind about it, Commander of the Faithful."Umar said, "Speak, my nephew, and do not belittle yourself."Ibn Abbas said, "It is a parable struck for a deed."Umar asked, "What deed?"Ibn Abbas replied, "For a deed."Umar said, "For a wealthy man who acts in obedience to Allah عز وجل , and then Allah sends Satan to him, so he commits acts of disobedience until he drowns all his deeds."

عن عبيد بن عمير قال

قال عمر يوما لأصحاب النبي ﷺ فيم ترون هذه الآية نزلت: {أيود أحدكم أن تكون له جنة}؟ قالوا: الله أعلم، فغضب عمر فقال: قولوا: نعلم أو لا نعلم، فقال ابن عباس: في نفسي منها شيء يا أمير المؤمنين، قال عمر: يا ابن أخي قل ولا تحقر نفسك، قال ابن عباس: ضربت مثلا لعمل، قال عمر: أي عمل؟ قال ابن عباس: لعمل، قال عمر: لرجل غني يعمل بطاعة الله عز وجل، ثم بعث الله له الشيطان، فعمل بالمعاصي حتى أغرق أعماله.

Bukhari related it in the Tafsir (4583), from Ibrahim (bin Musa), who said, Hisham (bin Yusuf) informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said, I heard Abdullah bin Abu Mulayka narrating from Ibn Abbas, who said, and I heard his brother Abu Bakr bin Abu Mulayka narrating from Ubayd bin Umayr, who said, and he mentioned it.As for His saying, "a garden", it means an orchard. As for His saying, "a whirlwind", it means a wind. As for His saying, "with fire in it", it means a wind containing intense scorching heat. As for His saying, "and it was burnt up", it means the fruits that he needed in his old age.This contains a parable of an elderly man who wasted his deeds through shirk and innovation at the end of his life, when he was in need of faith in Allah and righteous action to deliver him to Paradise.As for His saying, "so that you may reflect", it means so that you do not return to shirk, disbelief, and misguidance, for at the end of life people are in greatest need of faith and righteous action.
