The Messenger of Allah said, "We have more right to doubt than Ibrahim when he said, 'My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.' He said, 'Do you not believe?' He said, 'Yes, but so that my heart may be at peace'" [Baqarah 2:260].
قال رسول الله: نحن أحق بالشك من إبراهيم إذ قال: {رب أرني كيف تحي الموتى قال أولم تؤمن قال بلى ولكن ليطمئن قلبي}.
Bukhari related it in the Tafsir (4537), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (151), both from the hadith of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yunus told me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama and Saeed, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it.There is nothing in the hadith that amounts to an acknowledgment of doubt on his own part or on the part of Ibrahim, rather it contains a denial of doubt on the part of both of them. He is saying, "If I do not doubt Allah's power to bring the dead to life, then Ibrahim is even less likely to doubt it." He said that out of humility and self-effacement, as Khattabi noted. It is also said regarding this that Ibrahim did not ask about the act of bringing to life itself, since he knew with certainty that Allah is capable of that, but rather he asked about the manner of the resurrection, which falls under the category of increasing one's knowledge through direct observation. As for His saying, "then cut them into pieces" , this means slaughter them and cut them up. It is reported from Ibn Abbas concerning "fasurhunna" that he said, this is in the Nabataean tongue, meaning cut them into pieces. As for His saying, "then place a part of them on every mountain" , this means that after the slaughtering, mix the parts of the birds together, then place a portion of this mixture on every mountain. His saying, "then place a part of them on every mountain" did not specify a particular number of mountains, but left the matter to Ibrahim to distribute the parts of these birds over a number of mountains as he chose. As for His saying, "they will come to you swiftly" , this means that each part will return to its corresponding part, and they will then come to Ibrahim with their bodies whole. It is also said that the head of each bird remained with Ibrahim, and each of the remaining parts came to Ibrahim and attached itself to its head, so it returned to how it had been. When Ibrahim saw that, he said, "I know that Allah is mighty and wise."
