Ayesha instructed me to write out a copy of the Quran for her, and she said, "When you reach this verse, let me know, 'Guard strictly the prayers and the middle prayer' [Baqarah 2:238]."When I reached it, I informed her, and she dictated to me, "Guard strictly the prayers and the middle prayer and the afternoon prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience" [Baqarah 2:238].Ayesha said, "I heard it this way from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
Malik narrated it in "The Congregational Prayer" (26) from Zayd bin Aslam, from Qaqa bin Hakeem, from Abu Yunus, and he mentioned it. Muslim narrated it in "The Mosques" (629) through the route of Malik.Of similar meaning is what was narrated from Amr bin Rafi, the freedman of Umar bin Khattab, that he used to write copies of the Quran in the time of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, Hafsa asked me to write a copy of the Quran for her and said, "When you reach this verse from Surah Baqarah, do not write it until you bring it to me, and I will dictate it to you exactly as I memorized it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, when I reached it, I brought her the page I was writing on, and she said, "Write, "Be watchful over your prayers and the middle prayer and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience"."Ibn Hibban (6323) and Tahawi in his Mushkil (2068) both narrated this from the hadith of Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, from his father Ibrahim bin Saad, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Ali and Nafi, the freedman of Abdullah bin Umar, told me that Amr bin Rafi, the freedman of Umar bin Khattab, told them that he used to write, and he mentioned it.Amr bin Rafi was not declared trustworthy by anyone other than Ibn Hibban and Ajli, and I have not found any corroborating narrator for him. Malik narrated it from Zayd bin Aslam, from him, that he said, "I was writing a copy of the Quran for Hafsa, mother of the believers, and she said, 'When you reach this verse, notify me, "Be watchful over your prayers and the middle prayer and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience".' When I reached it, I notified her, and she dictated to me, "Be watchful over your prayers and the middle prayer and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience"."He narrated it in this way as a mawquf report, for Hafsa did not attribute it as marfu to the Prophet ﷺ. There is disagreement over whether it should be considered marfu or mawquf, and it all revolves around Amr bin Rafi. Reports of this kind are not to be relied upon for the reading of the Quran. For this reason, the commander of the believers Uthman bin Affan purged the mushaf of abrogated readings, just as he purged it of the companions' explanations and understandings. For they sometimes used to write alongside the mushaf its explanation, which they had heard from the Prophet ﷺ or had understood from the noble verse. In this way, Allah preserved His noble Book from addition and omission. His saying, "and stand before Allah in devout obedience" [Baqarah 2:238], means, in obedience.
