The Ansar used to give in charity, donating whatever Allah willed. Then a year of hardship struck them and they held back, so Allah revealed , "And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands, and do good, for Allah loves those who do good" [Baqarah 2:195].
Narrated by Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (1/332), Tabarani in al-Kabir (22/390), and Wahidi in Asbab al-Nuzul (pp. 50-51), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5709), all of them from the hadith of Hudba bin Khalid, who said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Dawud bin Abu Hind, from Shaybi, from Abu Jubayra bin Dahhak, and he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Hudba bin Khalid, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan. In some sources "Abu Jubayra bin Dahhak" has been inverted into "Dahhak bin Abu Jubayra," but the correct form is "Abu Jubayra bin Dahhak," as Ibn Hajar also confirmed in al-Isaba. There is disagreement about whether he was a companion, but the correct view is that he was indeed a companion, and so whoever treated the hadith as mursal was mistaken. In some sources the hadith is said to consist of two parts, the second part being about His saying, "and do not insult one another with nicknames" [Hujurat 49:11], which will be discussed in its proper place. The majority of scholars have interpreted "destruction" (tahluka) here as referring to withholding spending in the way of Allah. Ibn Abu Hatim, in his Tafsir, related this from Ibn Abbas, Ikrima, Hasan, Mujahid, Ataa, Saeed bin Abu Jubayr, Abu Salih, Dahhak, Suddi, Muqatil bin Hayan, and Qatada. The second meaning of "destruction" is a sinner's belief that there is no repentance for him, and there are hadiths concerning that.
