The Prophet ﷺ said one statement, and I said another. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever dies while calling upon a rival besides Allah enters the Fire." And I said, "Whoever dies without calling upon any rival besides Allah enters Paradise."
قال النبي ﷺ كلمة، وقلت أخرى، قال النبي ﷺ: من مات وهو يدعو من دون الله ندا دخل النار وقلت أنا: من مات وهو لا يدعو الله ندا دخل الجنة.
Bukhari related it in the tafsir (4497), and Muslim related it in faith (150:92), both from the hadith of Amash, from Shaqiq, from Abdullah bin Masud, as related above. This is what Abdullah bin Masud said, for it is well known that he was cautious about attributing hadith directly to the Prophet ﷺ. It has therefore been said that he heard both hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ himself, and he attributed directly to him the one he had memorized with certainty, while he left as his own statement the one he was uncertain about, since both wordings are established as coming from the Prophet ﷺ in the hadith of Jabir that follows.
