The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever he saw rain, would say, "A beneficial downpour."
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا رأى المطر قال: صيبا نافعا
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Rain-Seeking (1032) from Muhammad, that is Ibn Muqatil, Abu Hasan Marwazi, who said, Abdullah told us, who said, Ubaydullah told us, from Nafi, from Qasim bin Muhammad, from Ayesha, and he related it. Bukhari said, Qasim bin Yahya followed him in narrating it from Ubaydullah. Uzai and Aqeel also narrated it from Nafi (meaning from Qasim bin Muhammad, from Ayesha).Regarding this noble verse, Allah gave another parable for the hypocrites, that they are like the rain that falls in darkness, for they in their hypocrisy and behavior are like one who is in darkness. His saying, "and thunder", refers to the roar that unsettles hearts, and the hypocrite lives in constant fear. His saying, "and lightning", is the intensely bright flash that appears with the clouds. His saying, "the thunderbolts", is the plural of thunderbolt, which is fire that comes down from the sky at the time of thunder. His saying, "the lightning almost snatches away their sight", means that because of its intense brightness no one can look at it, and "snatching" here means the loss of sight. This is the condition of the hypocrites, for they face the thunder that frightens hearts and the lightning that dazzles eyes, so they put their fingers in their ears out of fear and terror, but their caution avails them nothing against the power of Allah, who encompasses them.It is reported from Ibn Abbas regarding "whenever it lights up for them they walk in it" that he said, whenever the hypocrites are touched by the might of Islam they feel secure in it, but if some setback befalls Islam they do not persist, and they return to disbelief, just as Allah Most High says, "And among the people is he who worships Allah on the edge, for if good befalls him he is content with it, but if a trial befalls him he turns his face away. He loses this world and the next. That is the manifest loss" [Hajj 22:11]. This was extracted by Tabari.It is reported from Abu Aliyah regarding the words of Allah Most High, "whenever it lights up for them they walk in it, but when darkness covers them they stand still", that he said, its likeness is that of a people traveling on a dark night, in which there is rain, thunder, and lightning, upon a well-trodden road. Whenever the lightning flashes they see the road and go along it, but when the lightning departs they are bewildered. Likewise is the hypocrite, whenever he speaks a word of sincerity it lights up for him, and whenever he doubts he becomes bewildered and falls into darkness. This was narrated by Ibn Abu Hatim in his tafsir.His saying, "but when darkness covers them they stand still", means that when doubts confront them they return to their hypocrisy, and they live disappointed and defeated. His saying, "and if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight", means that if Allah had wanted to strip them of their faith, He would have done so, leaving them to the truth, so that they would live on earth like the disbelievers who neither hear the truth nor see it. In this is a warning to the hypocrites who hear the words of Allah but do not heed them, but instead put their fingers in their ears and turn away from His commands and prohibitions because of their hypocrisy, while Allah has full power to expose what they conceal.
