The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Learn the Book of Allah, keep close to it, and recite it melodiously. By the One in whose hand my soul rests, it slips away faster than camels breaking loose from their tethers."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: تعلموا كتاب الله، وتعاهدوه وتغنوا به، فوالذي نفسي بيده لهو أشد تفلتا من المخاض في العقل.
Narrated by Ahmad (17317) and Ibn Abu Shayba (8660), and Ibn Hibban (119) graded it sahih, and Tabarani in al-Kabir (17/290), all of them through Musa bin Ali bin Rabah, who said, "I heard my father say, I heard Uqba bin Amir say," then he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Haythami said in al-Majmu (7/169), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and the men of Ahmad's chain are the men of sahih transmission."His saying "keep up with it" means, maintain it through continual recitation. His saying "chant it melodiously" means, recite it with a beautiful voice. His saying "escaping" means, fleeing from the chests. His saying "al-makhad" refers to pregnant she-camels.In a similar meaning, from Anas bin Malik, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said, "Keep up with the Quran, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, it is more prone to escape from the chests of men than camels are from their hobbles to their pens." Narrated by Tabarani in al-Awsat (3475, Majmu al-Bahrayn) from Ahmad (that is, Ibn Yahya bin Zuhayr Tustari), who said, Ishaq bin Shahin Wasiti related to us, Hushaym related to us, from Awf, from Hasan, from Anas bin Malik, then he related it.Hasan here is Ibn Abu Hasan Basri, a mudallis, and he narrated using ambiguous transmission wording without explicitly stating direct hearing. Haythami said in al-Majmu (7/169), "Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat and its men are trustworthy, except for Ahmad, Tabarani's teacher, who was not identified. If he is Ibn Khalil, then he is daif, and if he is someone else, then I do not know him."I say, Tabarani identified this teacher of his, Ahmad, six hadiths earlier, saying, "Ahmad bin Zuhayr narrated to us," then he mentioned several hadiths from him, and he is trustworthy and a hafiz. It was also narrated from Saad bin Ubada, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no man who recites the Quran and then forgets it except that he will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with his hand cut off." Narrated by Abu Dawud (1474) from Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Ibn Idris related to us, from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Isa bin Faid, from Saad bin Ubada, then he related it.Yazid bin Abu Ziyad is al-Hashimi, their client, from Kufa, and he is daif by consensus of the scholars. Isa bin Faid, Ibn Madini said of him, "unknown." The chain of transmission of this hadith is inconsistent, for sometimes he narrated it this way, and sometimes he narrated it from Isa bin Faid, from a man, from Saad bin Ubada, adding a man between Isa and Saad bin Ubada. And sometimes he narrated it from Isa bin Faid, from Ubada bin Samit, making it part of the narrations attributed to Ubada bin Samit, as in Musnad Ahmad (22781), and more than one scholar has criticized it on this basis. It was also narrated from Anas bin Malik, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The rewards of my nation were shown to me, down to even the speck of dust that a man removes from the masjid, and the sins of my nation were shown to me, and I did not see a sin greater than a surah of the Quran, or a verse, that a man was given and then forgot." Narrated by Abu Dawud (461) and Tirmidhi (2916), both of them from Abdul-Wahhab bin Abdul-Hakam Khazzaz, who said, Abdul-Majid bin Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Rawwad informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab, from Anas bin Malik, then he related it.Its chain of transmission is disconnected, for Ibn Jurayj did not hear directly from Muttalib, rather he used to take his hadiths from Ibn Abu Yahya, from him. This was stated by Ali bin Madini, as mentioned in al-Kifaya by Khatib (p. 358), and Tuhfat Tahsil (p. 212). Likewise, Muttalib bin Abdullah did not hear directly from Anas bin Malik.Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith, we do not know it except through this route, and I discussed it with Muhammad bin Ismail, but he did not know it and found it gharib. Muhammad said, I do not know of any hearing on the part of Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab from any of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, except his statement, 'someone who witnessed the sermon of the Prophet related to me.' And I heard Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman say, We do not know of any hearing on the part of Muttalib from any of the companions of the Prophet." Abdullah said, "And Ali bin Madini denied that Muttalib had heard from Anas." End of quote.
