Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Quran (5055), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Prayer of Travelers (800:247), both of them through the route of Sulayman Amash, from Ibrahim, from Ubayda, from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, then he related the hadith.In similar meaning, from Amr bin Hurayth, who said, the Prophet ﷺ said to Abdullah bin Masud, "Recite." He said, "Shall I recite when it was revealed upon you?" The Prophet said, "I love to hear it from someone other than myself." So he began Surah Nisa until he reached, "So how will it be when We bring a witness from every nation, and bring you as a witness against these people" [Nisa 4:41]. At that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept, and Abdullah stopped reciting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Speak." So he praised Allah at the beginning of his speech, extolled Allah, invoked blessings upon the Prophet, and bore witness to the truth, and said, "We are content with Allah as our Lord, and with Islam as our religion, and I am content for you with what Allah and His Messenger are content with." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "I am content for you with what the son of Umm Abd is content with for you."Hakim narrated it (3/319) from Abu Fadl Hasan bin Yaqub bin Yusuf the trustworthy judge, who said, Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhab Abdi told us, Jafar bin Awn told us, Masudi told us, from Jafar bin Amr bin Hurayth, from his father, who said, then he related the hadith.Jafar bin Amr bin Hurayth is unknown, no one has affirmed his reliability except Ibn Hibban, who mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators in his book, and I have not found anyone else who corroborates him. He added at the end of the hadith, "We are content with Allah as our Lord..."Weeping occurs when one reflects on the threats and severe warnings being recited, and thinks about his own shortcomings, and realizes that the Quran is addressing him before it addresses anyone else.
