The Prophet ﷺ was at the pond of Banu Ghifar when Jibreel came to him and said, "Allah commands you to recite the Quran to your community in one mode."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, but my community cannot bear that."Then Jibreel came to him a second time and said, "Allah commands you to recite the Quran to your community in two modes."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, but my community cannot bear that."Then he came to him a third time and said, "Allah commands you to recite the Quran to your community in three modes."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness, but my community cannot bear that."Then he came to him a fourth time and said, "Allah commands you to recite the Quran to your community in seven modes, and whichever mode they recite in, they have done right."
أن النبي ﷺ كان عند أضاة بني غفار، قال: فأتاه جبريل عليه السلام. فقال: إن الله يأمرك أن تقرأ أمتك القرآن على حرف، فقال: أسأل الله معافاته ومغفرته وإن أمتي لا تطيق ذلك. ثم أتاه الثانية فقال: إن الله يأمرك أن تقرأ أمتك القرآن على حرفين. فقال: أسأل الله معافاته ومغفرته وإن أمتي لا تطيق ذلك. ثم جاءه الثالثة فقال: إن الله يأمرك أن تقرأ أمتك القرآن على ثلاثة أحرف، فقال: أسأل الله معافاته ومغفرته وإن أمتي لا تطيق ذلك. ثم جاءه الرابعة فقال: إن الله يأمرك أن تقرأ أمتك القرآن على سبعة أحرف فأيما حرف قرأوا عليه فقد أصابوا.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Travelers' Prayer (821) through several routes from Shubah, from Hakam, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abu Layla, from Ubayy bin Kaab, and he mentioned it.His saying "adah" follows the pattern of "hasah," and it refers to standing water collected from a flood or otherwise. It is also said to be a small pond. Banu Ghifar is a tribe from Kinanah, and Adat Bani Ghifar is a place near Makkah.
