Ati reported, "I was in Medina among a group of people that included some companions of the Prophet ﷺ when a man came whose face bore the marks of humility and devotion. Someone in the group remarked, 'This is a man from the people of Paradise. This is a man from the people of Paradise.' He prayed two brief units of prayer and then left. I followed him until he entered his home, and I went in with him. We talked together, and once he felt at ease with me, I said to him, 'When you came in earlier, a certain man said such and such about you.'He replied, "Glory be to Allah! It is not proper for anyone to say what he does not know. Let me tell you why he said that. I had a dream during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I related it to him. I saw myself in a meadow." He described its vastness, its grass, and its greenery. "In the middle of the meadow stood a pillar of iron, its base in the ground and its top reaching the sky, and at its top was a handhold. I was told, 'Climb it.'I said, 'I am not able to.'Then a helper came to me." Ibn Awn explained that munsif means a servant. "He lifted me from behind by my garments." He described how the helper raised him up with his hand from behind. "So I climbed until I reached the top of the pillar, and I grasped the handhold. I was told, 'Hold fast.' I awoke, and the handhold was still in my grip. I related the dream to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'That meadow is Islam, that pillar is the pillar of Islam, and that handhold is the most trustworthy handhold. You will remain firm upon Islam until you die.'"The narrator said, "And the man was Abdullah bin Salam."In another wording from him, he said, "I was in a study circle that included Saad bin Malik and Ibn Umar when Abdullah bin Salam passed by..." and he mentioned something similar in abbreviated form.
Bukhari narrated it in the Merits of the Ansar (3813) and Muslim in the Merits of the Companions (148:2484), both through the route of Abdullah bin Awn, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Qays bin Abbad, who related it, and the wording is Muslim's. Bukhari also narrated it in Interpretation of Dreams (7010) and Muslim in the Merits of the Companions (149:2484), both through the route of Qurra bin Khalid, from Ibn Sirin, from him, relating something similar in brief, containing the second wording.
