"There was no one among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ who narrated more hadith from him than I did, except for Abdullah bin Amr, for he used to write, while I did not."
ما من أصحاب النبي ﷺ أحد أكثر حديثا عنه مني، إلا ما كان من عبد الله بن عمرو، فإنه كان يكتب، ولا أكتب.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Knowledge (113) from Ali bin Abdullah, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, who said, Amr narrated to us, who said, Wahb bin Munabbi informed me, from his brother, who said, I heard Abu Hurairah say, and then he related it.Imam Ahmad narrated it (9231) with the wording, "No one had more knowledge of the hadith of the Messenger of Allah than me, except for Abdullah bin Amr, for he used to write it down with his hand and retain it in his heart, while I would only retain it in my heart and did not write with my hand. He asked the Messenger of Allah for permission to write down what he heard from him, and he granted him permission."He narrated it through Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Amr bin Shuayb, from Mujahid and Mughira bin Hakeem, both of them from Abu Hurairah, with this wording.This narration includes Muhammad bin Ishaq, who was known to conceal breaks in his chains of transmission, and here he narrated it using the ambiguous formula "from" rather than stating direct hearing.
