Some people came and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a companion of theirs, requesting permission to cauterize him. He remained silent. They asked him three times, and each time he remained silent, disliking the practice.
جاء ناس فسألوا رسول الله ﷺ عن صاحب لهم أن يكووه فسكت، ثم سألوه ثلاثا فسكت، وكره ذلك.

Ibn Hibban (6082) and Tahawi in his commentary (6998) both narrated it from Shubah, who said, Abu Ishaq informed us, saying, I heard Abu Ahwas narrating from Abdullah bin Masud, who said... and then he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is of the highest degree of soundness, because Shubah was among the earliest companions of Abu Ishaq.The hadith was also narrated by Abdul-Razzaq (19517), Ahmad (3701), Tahawi in his commentary (6999), and Hakim (4/416), all through other routes from Abu Ishaq, mentioning something similar.The wording of Ahmad and others is, "Cauterize him and press heated stones upon him," meaning place him on heated stones, as though he said that while angry.
