The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah said, "I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him wherever he remembers Me. By Allah, Allah rejoices more at the repentance of His servant than any of you would at finding his lost animal in the wilderness. Whoever draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by a cubit. Whoever draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by an arm's length. And when he comes to Me walking, I come to him at a hurried pace."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Tawhid (7405), and Muslim in the Book of Repentance (2675), both through Abu Salih (who is al-Samman), from Abu Hurairah, who narrated it. The wording given is Muslim's, and Bukhari did not mention his saying, "By Allah, Allah rejoices more over the repentance of His servant..." Muslim also related it (2765) through Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah rejoices more over the repentance of one of you than one of you would over finding his lost animal, when he finds it."
