The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say often, "Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."I said, "Prophet of Allah, we have believed in you and in what you brought. Do you still fear for us?"He replied, "Yes, for hearts are between two of Allah's fingers. He turns them however He wills."
كان رسول الله ﷺ يكثر أن يقول: يا مقلب القلوب ثبت قلبي على دينك. فقلت: يا نبي الله، آمنا بك، وبما جئت به، فهل تخاف علينا؟ قال: نعم، إن القلوب بين أصبعين من أصابع الله يقلبها كيف يشاء.
It was narrated by Tirmidhi (2140) and Ahmad (12107), and Hakim graded it sahih (1/526), all of them by way of Abu Muawiya, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas, as mentioned. Tirmidhi said, "A hasan hadith."I say, it is as he said, for Abu Sufyan is Talha bin Nafi Wasiti, whose narrations are hasan.Tirmidhi said, "This is how more than one narrator related it from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas. Some of them related it from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, from the Prophet ﷺ, and the hadith of Abu Sufyan from Anas is more sahih." End of quote.I say, the hadith of Jabir referred to was narrated by Abu Yaala (2318) and Hakim (2/288–289) by way of Thawri, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir. Its chain is also strong, but it is outweighed according to the opinion of most scholars.A note, there is a gap in the isnad of the hadith of Jabir in al-Mustadrak, which should be corrected from Ithaf Mahra (3/178).
