The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from severe affliction, from being overtaken by misery, from an evil decree, and from the gloating of enemies.Sufyan said, "The hadith contains three, and I added one myself, but I do not know which of them it is."
كان رسول الله ﷺ يتعوذ من جهد البلاء ودرك الشقاء، وسوء القضاء، وشماتة الأعداء. قال سفيان: الحديث ثلاث، زدت أنا واحدة لا أدري أيتهن هي.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Supplications (6347), and Muslim in the Book of Remembrance and Supplication (2707), both through routes from Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Sumayy told me, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. The wording given here is Bukhari's. Muslim said at the end of it, "Amr, meaning al-Naqid, said in his hadith, 'Sufyan said, I am not certain that I added one of them.'" End of quote.I say, the identification of the added phrase appears in other narrations from Ibn Uyayna, namely his saying, "and the gloating of enemies." Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (11/148), "Jawzaqi related it through the route of Abdullah bin Hashim, from Sufyan, and he confined it to three, then said, 'Sufyan said, and the gloating of enemies.' Ismaili also related it through the route of Ibn Abu Umar, that is Adani, from Sufyan, and made clear that the added trait was the gloating of enemies. Ismaili likewise related it through the route of Shujaa bin Makhlad, from Sufyan, confining it to the three without it, and from this the identification of the added trait became known." End of quote.
