Husayn, or Husayn, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Muhammad, Abdul-Muttalib was better to his people than you. He used to feed them liver and hump, while you slaughter them."The Prophet ﷺ said to him whatever Allah willed him to say.Then the man asked, "What do you command me to say?"He replied, "Say, 'O Allah, protect me from the evil of myself, and resolve me upon the most rightly guided course of my affair.'"The man went off and embraced Islam. Then he came back and said, "I came to you before, and you told me to say, 'O Allah, protect me from the evil of myself, and resolve me upon the most rightly guided course of my affair.' What should I say now?"He answered, "Say, 'O Allah, forgive me what I have concealed and what I have made public, what I have done by mistake and what I have done deliberately, what I have known and what I have been ignorant of.'"
أن حصينا أو حصينا أتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا محمد، لعبد المطلب كان خيرا لقومه منك، كان يطعمهم الكبد والسنام، وأنت تنحرهم، فقال له النبي ﷺ ما شاء الله أن يقول، فقال له ما تأمرني أن أقول، قال: قل: اللهم قني شر نفسي واعزم لي على أرشد أمري، قال: فانطلق فأسلم الرجل ثم جاء فقال: إني أتيتك فقلت لي: قل: اللهم قني شر نفسي واعزم لي على أرشد أمري فما أقول الآن؟ قال: قل: اللهم اغفر لي ما أسررت وما أعلنت وما أخطأت وما عمدت وما علمت وما جهلت.
Ahmad narrated it (19992), Nasai in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (994), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (899), all of them through Mansur bin Mutamir, who said, Rabi bin Harash narrated to me, from Imran bin Husayn, and he related it. Its chain is sahih. Ibn Hajar also graded it sahih in his biography of Husayn bin Ubayd in al-Isabah.It was also narrated through Mansur, from Rubai, from Imran bin Husayn, from his father, making it part of the musnad of Husayn. A discrepancy like this does no harm.What Tirmidhi narrated (3483) is not sound, through Shabib bin Shayba, from Hasan Basri, from Imran bin Husayn, who said, the Prophet ﷺ said to my father, "Husayn, how many gods do you worship today?" My father said, "Seven. Six on earth, and one in heaven." He said, "Which of them do you look to for your hopes and fears?" He said, "The one in heaven." He said, "Husayn, if you were to accept Islam, I would teach you two phrases that would benefit you." He said, so when Husayn accepted Islam, he said, "Messenger of Allah, teach me the two phrases you promised me." So he said, "Say, O Allah, inspire me with right guidance and protect me from the evil of my own self."Then Tirmidhi said, "This hadith is unusual (gharib), and it has been narrated from Imran bin Husayn through a route other than this one."I say, its chain contains Shabib bin Shayba, who is Tamimi Minqari, Abu Muamar Basri the preacher. The majority of the scholars declared him daif, among them Ibn Main, Abu Zura, Abu Hatim, Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Daraqutni. And Hasan Basri did not hear from Imran bin Husayn.
