He said, "I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza."His companions said to him, "You have spoken something abominable."So he went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "My time in disbelief was recent, and I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Say, 'There is no god but Allah alone,' three times, then spit lightly to your left three times, seek refuge with Allah, and do not do it again."
حلفت باللات والعزى. فقال أصحابي: قد قلت هجرا، فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت: إن العهد كان قريبا، وإني حلفت باللات والعزى، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: قل: لا إله إلا الله وحده، ثلاثا، ثم انفث عن يسارك ثلاثا، وتعوذ ولا تعد.
Nasai (3776), Ibn Majah (2097), and Ahmad (1589) all narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (4364) graded it sahih, all of them through various routes from Abu Ishaq Sabi, from Musab bin Saad, from his father Saad bin Abu Waqqas, who related it as mentioned. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Ishaq Sabi is Amr bin Abdullah, whose memory became confused before his death, but in some of its routes it was narrated from him by Israil bin Yunus bin Abu Ishaq Sabi, and his narration from him is of the utmost soundness.The meaning of the hadith is that whoever swears by Lat and Uzza has, in effect, set up a partner with Allah, so he should correct this by saying, "There is no god but Allah alone," three times, and seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan. For by doing this he will return to the affirmation of Allah's oneness, and Satan's whispering will depart from him.
