The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever puts on a garment and says, 'Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this and provided it for me without any power or strength of my own,' his past sins will be forgiven."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من لبس ثوبا فقال: الحمد لله الذي كساني هذا ورزقنيه من غير حول مني ولا قوة، غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه.
Abu Dawud (4023), Darimi (2732), Abu Yaala (1488), and Ibn Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (272) all narrated it through the hadith of Abu Abdul-Rahman Abdullah bin Yazid Muqri, from Saeed bin Abu Ayub, from Abu Marhum Abdul-Rahim bin Maymun, from Sahl bin Muaz bin Anas, from his father, as mentioned. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abu Marhum Abdul-Rahim bin Maymun, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when his error is not apparent. Abu Dawud added, "and what is to come," but this addition was not narrated by most of those who transmitted this hadith, so it is an anomalous addition. As for what was narrated from Abu Umama, who said, "Umar bin Khattab put on a new garment and said, 'Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with what covers my private parts and in which I may adorn myself in my life.' Then he took the garment that had become worn and gave it in charity. Then he said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever puts on a new garment and says, 'Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with what covers my private parts and in which I may adorn myself in my life,' then takes the garment that has become worn and gives it in charity, will be in the protection of Allah, in the safekeeping of Allah, and under the covering of Allah, alive and dead."'"Its chain of transmission is daif.Tirmidhi (3560), Ibn Majah (3557), Ahmad (305), and Ibn Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (273) all narrated it through the hadith of Yazid bin Harun, from Asbagh bin Zayd, from Abu Ala, from Abu Umama, as mentioned. Its chain of transmission is daif due to the obscurity of Abu Ala Shami. That is why Tirmidhi said, "This is an isolated hadith. Yahya bin Abu Ayub narrated it from Ubaydullah bin Zahr, from Ali bin Yazid, from Qasim, from Abu Umama."I say, from this route Ibn Mubarak narrated it in Zuhd (749), and through his route Hakim (4/193) narrated it as well. Its chain of transmission includes Ali bin Yazid, who is Alhani, and he is daif. Likewise Ubaydullah bin Zahr.Daraqutni mentioned its various routes and their defects in Ilal (2/137–138), then said, "This hadith is not established."
