The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the funeral prayer over a deceased person, and I memorized from his supplication as he was saying, "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his place of arrival, make spacious his entry, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave," or "from the punishment of the Fire."He said, "I wished that I were that deceased person."
صلى رسول الله ﷺ على جنازة، فحفظت من دعائه وهو يقول: اللهم اغفر له وارحمه، وعافه واعف عنه، وأكرم نزله، ووسع مدخله، واغسله بالماء والثلج والبرد، ونقه من الخطايا كما نقيت الثوب الأبيض من الدنس، وأبدله دارا خيرا من داره، وأهلا خيرا من أهله، وزوجا خيرا من زوجه، وأدخله الجنة، وأعذه من عذاب القبر (أو من عذاب النار) قال: حتى تمنيت أن أكون أنا ذلك الميت.
Muslim reported it in the Book of Funerals (963) from Harun bin Saeed Ayli, [who said], Ibn Wahb informed us, Muawiya bin Salih informed me, from Habib bin Ubayd, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, who heard him say, I heard Awf bin Malik, and then he related the hadith. Muslim also reported it (963:86) through the route of Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from his father, from Awf, in similar fashion, and it contains the wording, "as the white garment is cleansed."Tirmidhi (1025) reported from Bukhari that he said, The most sahih thing on this subject is this hadith, and he mentioned the hadith in abridged form with the wording, "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, and cleanse him with cold water as a garment is cleansed," using the passive voice. This is clear in its meaning.
