I heard Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, while he was seated on the pulpit, when the muezzin gave the call to prayer. The muezzin said, "Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest."Muawiya said, "Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest."The muezzin said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah."Muawiya said, "And so do I."The muezzin said, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."Muawiya said, "And so do I."When the call to prayer was finished, Muawiya said, "People, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this very place, when the muezzin gave the call, say what you have just heard me say."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Friday (914), from Ibn Muqatil, who said, Abdullah (that is, Ibn Mubarak) informed us, who said, Abu Bakr bin Uthman bin Sahl bin Hunayf informed us, from Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf, and he related the hadith. He also narrated it in the chapter on the adhan (612), through Hisham, from Yahya (that is, Ibn Abu Kathir), from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Harith, who said, Isa bin Talha narrated to me, from Muawiya, similarly. Then Bukhari said (613), Yahya said, one of our brothers told me that when the muezzin said, "Come to prayer," he said, "There is no power nor strength except with Allah," and he said, "This is how we heard your Prophet say it."The commentators of Bukhari differed over identifying this unnamed person, each saying what his own reasoning led him to conclude.Ahmad narrated it (16896) from Yahya, from Muhammad bin Amr, who said, my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, who said, we were with Muawiya, and the muezzin said, "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest," so Muawiya said, "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest."The muezzin said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," and Muawiya said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah." The muezzin said, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and Muawiya said, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."The muezzin said, "Come to prayer," and Muawiya said, "There is no power nor strength except with Allah." The muezzin said, "Come to success," and Muawiya said, "There is no power nor strength except with Allah."The muezzin said, "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest," and Muawiya said, "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest." The muezzin said, "There is no god but Allah," and Muawiya said, "There is no god but Allah."Muawiya said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say it, or your Prophet," when the muezzin gave the adhan. There is some criticism regarding its chain of transmission, but it is strengthened by another route, as is explained in detail in the book on prayer.
