Whenever they suffered drought, Umar bin Khattab would seek rain through Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. He would say, "O Allah, we used to seek means to You through our Prophet and You would give us rain. Now we seek means to You through the uncle of our Prophet, so give us rain." And they would be given rain.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on rain prayer (1010), from Hasan bin Muhammad, who said Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari narrated to us, who said my father Abdullah bin Muthanna narrated to me, from Thumama bin Abdullah bin Anas, from Anas, who mentioned it.His statement, "We used to seek intercession with You through our Prophet" means through the supplication of our Prophet.Allah answered the supplication of Umar bin Khattab, as mentioned in Musannaf Ibn Abu Shayba (32665) and Dalail Bayhaqi (7/47), that the Prophet came to a man in a dream and said to him, "Go to Umar, give him my greetings of peace, and tell him that you will be given rain."As for the story that Ibn Abu Shayba mentioned from Malik Dar, who said, he was Umar's custodian over the food, he said, the people were struck by a drought in the time of Umar, so a man came to the grave of the Prophet
and said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray for rain for your nation, for they have perished." The man was then visited in a dream and was told, "Go to Umar, give him my greetings of peace, and tell him that you will be given rain, and tell him, be shrewd, be shrewd." So the man went to Umar and told him, and Umar wept and said, "O Lord, I fail only in what I am incapable of." He narrated it from Abu Muawiya, from Amash, from Abu Salih, from Malik Dar.This, aside from the defect present in its chain of transmission, also has an objectionable element in its text, and Umar's failure to object to it indicates that he was not aware of the man's story, because if the man's story had been confirmed to him, he would not have resorted to seeking intercession through the supplication of the Prophet's
uncle. Moreover, the story involves an unknown man, though Sayf narrated in al-Futuh that the one who saw the dream mentioned was Bilal bin Harith Muzani, one of the companions, as Ibn Hajar stated in Fath al-Bari (2/496).I say, this Sayf is Ibn Umar Dabbi Asadi, author of the book al-Ridda wal-Futuh, who died during the time of Rashid. Tirmidhi recorded a hadith from him in his Sunan (3866) and said, "Rejected." Ibn Hibban gave his biography in al-Majruhin (437) and said, he was accused of heresy, and he narrates fabricated reports from reliable narrators. He also quoted Ibn Numayr as saying, he used to fabricate hadith. Someone like this cannot have his statement accepted. Moreover, Ibn Hajar did not present his chain of transmission for examination. His Eminence Shaykh bin Baz commented on Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar (2/495), saying, "This report, even assuming it is sound as the commentator said, is not evidence for the permissibility of seeking rain through the Prophet
after his death, because the questioner is unknown, and because the practice of the companions
was contrary to it, and they were the most knowledgeable of people regarding the sacred law, and none of them came to his grave to ask him for rain or anything else. Rather, Umar turned away from that when the drought occurred, seeking rain instead through Abbas, and none of the companions objected to that, which shows that this was the truth, and that what this man did was objectionable, and a means toward shirk, indeed some scholars have classified it as a type of shirk."Following Umar's action of seeking rain through Abbas's supplication, the same practice was later followed as well, for Ibn Hajar said in the biography of Yazid bin Aswad Jurashi in al-Isaba (9434, third part), "Abu Zura Dimashqi and Yaqub bin Sufyan both recorded, in their histories, with a sahih chain, from Salim bin Amir, that the people of Damascus suffered a drought, so Muawiya went out to seek rain through Yazid bin Aswad, and they were given rain."
