Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Three men set out on some errand of theirs and took shelter in a mountain, but it collapsed upon them. They said to one another, 'Reflect on the best of your deeds and call upon Allah by them, perhaps Allah will relieve you.'One of them said, 'O Allah, I had a beloved woman friend whom I kept pursuing until I obtained from her what I wanted. She said, "I remind you of Allah that you not commit what Allah has forbidden you." I said, "I am more deserving to fear Him." So I left her, out of fear of You and seeking Your pleasure. If You know this to be true, then relieve us.'The mountain split open enough that they hoped to escape, but they could not get out.The second said, 'O Allah, there were laborers who worked for me, and each one took his wages except one, who left his behind. He claimed that his wages were greater than those of his companions, so I set aside his wages from my own wealth until they grew into goods and livestock. After he had become poor and old, he came to me and said, "I remind you of Allah concerning my wages, for I am in greater need of them now than ever before." I went up onto a roof and showed him what Allah had multiplied of his wages in the form of property and livestock out in the open lands, meaning in the wilderness. I said, "This is yours." He said, "Are you mocking me, may Allah make you well? I would have settled for less than this and you refused me." But I gave it all to him, my Lord, out of fear of You and seeking Your pleasure. If You know this to be true, then relieve us.'The mountain split open further, but they still could not escape. The third said, 'My Lord, I had two elderly, poor parents who had no servant, no shepherd, and no caretaker but me. I would graze the flock for them by day and return to them at night. The pasture grew distant, so I went far with the livestock and came back to them late one night after much of the night had passed, and they were already asleep. I milked into a vessel, then sat by their heads with the vessel, unwilling to wake them, waiting for them to wake on their own. O Allah, if You know that I did this out of fear of You and seeking Your pleasure, then relieve us.'The mountain split open and they came out."
