Speak to the people once every Friday. If you refuse, then twice. If you wish to do more, then three times, but do not make people weary of this Quran. I should never find you coming to a group while they are engaged in a conversation of their own, then telling them stories, cutting off their discussion and wearying them. Instead, stay silent, and when they ask you, then speak to them while they desire it.Beware of rhymed phrasing in supplication and avoid it, for I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions doing nothing but that. Meaning, they did nothing but avoid it.
حدث الناس كل جمعة مرة، فإن أبيت فمرتين، فإن أكثرت فثلاث مرار، ولا تمل الناس هذا القرآن، ولا ألفينك تأتي القوم وهم في حديث من حديثهم، فتقص عليهم، فتقطع عليهم حديثهم، فتملهم ولكن أنصت، فإذا أمروك فحدثهم وهم يشتهونه، فانظر السجع من الدعاء فاجتنبه، فإني عهدت رسول الله ﷺ وأصحابه لا يفعلون إلا ذلك. يعني: لا يفعلون إلا ذلك الاجتناب.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Supplications (6337), from Yahya bin Muhammad bin Sakan, who said, "Habban bin Hilal Abu Habib narrated to us, Harun Muqri narrated to us, Zubayr bin Khurayt narrated to us, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas," and he mentioned it.The scholars said, "The rhymed prose that is disapproved of in supplication is that which is contrived, for it drives away humility, submission, and sincerity, and distracts from earnest pleading, neediness, and emptying the heart. But whatever occurs without contrivance or deliberate effort of thought, due to natural eloquence and the like, there is no harm in it."See Sharh Nawawi ala Sahih Muslim (17/41).
