Ubayy heard his son say, "O Allah, I ask You for the white palace on the right side of Paradise when I enter it."Ubayy said, "My son, ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge with Him from the Fire, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There will be among this nation people who transgress in purification and in supplication.'"
أنه سمع ابنه يقول: اللهم إنى أسألك القصر الأبيض عن يمين الجنة إذا دخلتها. فقال: أى بني سل الله الجنة، وتعوذ به من النار، فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: إنه سيكون في هذه الأمة قوم يعتدون في الطهور والدعاء.
Abu Dawud (96) and Ibn Majah (3864) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (6764) and Hakim (1/162, 540) graded it sahih, all of them through the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, who said, Jareeri narrated to us, from Abu Nuama, from Abdullah bin Mughafal, and he mentioned it, except that Ibn Majah did not mention "purification." Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ibn Hajar also graded it sahih in Talkhis (1/144).Similar in meaning is what was reported from Abu Nuama, from Ibn Saad, who said, "My father heard me saying, 'O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and its delights and its splendor, and such and such, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire and its chains and its shackles, and such and such,' so he said, 'My son, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There will be people who go to excess in supplication." So beware of being one of them. If you are given Paradise, you are given it along with all the good that is in it, and if you are granted refuge from the Fire, you are granted refuge from it along with all the evil that is in it.'"Abu Dawud (1480) narrated it from Musaddad, who said, Yahya narrated to us, from Shuba, from Ziyad bin Mikhraq, from Abu Nuama, and he mentioned it. There occurred severe confusion in its chain of transmission, for Ziyad bin Mikhraq, although he is trustworthy, did not correctly establish the chain of transmission of this hadith, as Ahmad said, for what is correct is that it is from the hadith of Abdullah bin Mughafal, as mentioned before.
