Whenever a group brought their charity to the Prophet ﷺ, he would say, "O Allah, bless the family of so-and-so." When my father brought his charity, he said, "O Allah, bless the family of Abu Awfa."
كان النبي ﷺ إذا أتاه قوم بصدقتهم قال: اللهم صل على آل فلان، فأتاه أبي بصدقته فقال: اللهم صل على آل أبي أوفى.
Bukhari narrated it in Zakat (1497), and Muslim narrated it in Zakat (1078), both through the route of Shuba, from Amr bin Mura, from Abdullah bin Abu Awfa, and he related it.The jurisprudence of this chapter is that prayers and greetings of peace may be invoked upon all the prophets and messengers. Allah Almighty said about Nuh , "We left him among later generations. Peace be upon Nuh among the worlds" [Saffat 37:78–79]. He said about Ibrahim, "We left him among later generations. Peace be upon Ibrahim" [Saffat 37:108–109]. And Allah Almighty said about Musa and Harun, "We left them both among later generations. Peace be upon Musa and Harun" [Saffat 37:119–120].Hadiths have been narrated concerning invoking prayers upon all the prophets and messengers, though their chains of transmission are subject to criticism. Nawawi and others have reported a consensus that invoking prayers upon all the prophets is legitimate. See Jala Afham (p. 635).As for those who are not prophets, there is no harm in invoking prayers upon them occasionally, so long as this is not made a habitual practice.Ibn Qayyim said in Jala Afham (pp. 663-664), "The decisive word on this matter is that invoking prayers upon someone other than the Prophet ﷺ is either upon his family, his wives, and his descendants, or upon others. If it is the former, then invoking prayers upon them is legitimate when done together with invoking prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, and it is also permissible on its own.As for the latter, if it concerns the angels and the obedient servants in general, among whom are included all the prophets and others, this too is permissible, so one may say, 'O Allah, send prayers upon Your angels who are near to You, and upon all who obey You.'But if it concerns a specific individual or a specific group, it is disliked to adopt invoking prayers upon him as a fixed slogan that one never abandons. Indeed, if one were to say it is forbidden, this would have merit, especially if it is made his particular slogan while his equal, or one better than him, is denied it. This is what the Rafidah do regarding Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, for whenever they mention him they say, 'Peace and blessings be upon him,' yet they do not say this about those who are better than him. This is forbidden, especially when it is adopted as a fixed slogan that is never abandoned, in which case abandoning it becomes obligatory. As for invoking prayers upon him occasionally, without making it a fixed slogan, as was done for the one who paid zakat... and as the Prophet ﷺ invoked prayers upon the woman and her husband... there is no harm in this. With this detailed explanation, the evidences are reconciled and the correct view becomes clear. And Allah is the One who grants success." End of quote.
