I asked, "Messenger of Allah, what about the children of the believers?"He replied, "They are with their fathers."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, without any deeds of their own?"He answered, "Allah knows best what they would have done."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, what about the children of the polytheists?"He replied, "They are with their fathers."I asked, "Without any deeds of their own?"He answered, "Allah knows best what they would have done."
Abu Dawud (4712) narrated it from Abdul-Wahhab bin Najda, who said, Baqiyya narrated to us. And Musa bin Marwan Raqqi and Kathir bin Ubayd Madhhaji narrated to us, both saying, Muhammad bin Harb narrated to us, the meaning being, from Muhammad bin Ziyad, from Abdullah bin Abu Qays, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih. Muhammad bin Harb is Khawlani Himsi Abrash, trustworthy, one of the men accepted by all the compilers. As for what has been reported from Ali bin Abu Talib, who said, "I asked Khadijah about two children of hers who had died during the Age of Ignorance, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told her, 'They are in the Fire.' When he saw the displeasure on her face, he said, 'If you saw their place, you would hate them.' She said, 'Messenger of Allah, and my child by you?' He said, 'In Paradise.'" He said, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The children of believers are in Paradise, and the children of polytheists are in the Fire." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "Those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith, We will join their descendants to them" [Tur 52:21]. This is daif.Abdullah narrated it in the Musnad of his father (1131) from Uthman bin Abu Shayba, who said, Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Uthman, from Zazan, from Ali bin Abu Talib, and he mentioned it. In it, Muhammad bin Uthman is unknown. Dhahabi said in Mizan (3/642), "It is not known who he is. I searched for him in various places, and he has a munkar report." Then he cited this hadith from Abdullah bin Ahmad with this same chain. Ibn Abu Asim also transmitted it by this route in Sunnah (213), and Haythami criticized it on this basis in Majma (7/217).The objectionable element in this hadith is its statement that the children of polytheists are in the Fire, since this contradicts the words of Allah Most High, "And We would not punish until We sent a messenger" [Isra 17:15]. If Allah does not punish a rational adult because the message did not reach him, then all the more so He would not punish a non-rational child. It also contradicts numerous hadiths indicating that the children of polytheists are in Paradise, as a bounty and mercy from Allah. This is drawn from the notes of Shaykh Albani in his commentary on Sunnah by Ibn Abu Asim (1/95).As for what has been reported that the children of polytheists will be servants of the people of Paradise, this has not been established by any reliable chain. It has been reported through Anas bin Malik, but its chain contains Mubarak bin Fadala, from Ali bin Zayd, from Anas. Bazzar transmitted it through this route in Kashf Astar (2170, 2171), both as a raised hadith and as a stopped one. Mubarak bin Fadala and Ali bin Zayd, who is Ibn Jadan, are both daif. Abu Yaala also narrated it, and it contains Yazid Raqashi, who is daif.It has also been reported through Samura bin Jundab, and it contains Abbad bin Mansur, who is daif. Bazzar narrated it in Kashf Astar (2172). Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated this hadith from the Prophet ﷺ except Samura, nor from him except Abu Raja." I say, so he said, but it has also been transmitted from Anas, as mentioned above, though all of it is daif.
