Bishr reported from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Receive the good news and announce it to the people. Whoever says, 'There is no god but Allah,' sincerely will enter Paradise."So they went out announcing the good news to the people, but Umar met them and turned them back.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who turned you back?"They answered, "Umar."He said, "Why did you turn them back, Umar?"Umar replied, "Messenger of Allah, in that case the people will rely on it alone."
ى، عن أبيه أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: أبشروا وبشروا الناس، من قال: لا إله إلا الله صادقا بها دخل الجنة. فخرجوا يبشرون الناس، فلقيهم عمر، فبشروه، فردهم فقال رسول الله ﷺ: من ردكم؟ قالوا: عمر… قال: لم رددتهم يا عمر؟ قال: إذا يتكل الناس يا رسول الله.
Ahmad (19689) and Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil (4003) both narrated it through Hammad bin Salama, who said, Abu Imran Jawni narrated to us, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Musa, from his father, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Ahmad (19597) also narrated it from Muammal bin Ismail, who said, Hammad narrated it to us in the same manner, and he added, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent." But Muammal has weak memory, and Bahz bin Assad and Rawh bin Ubada both narrated it from Hammad bin Salama without mentioning, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent."The absence of this mention does not necessarily mean he was silent. Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ affirmed Umar's view, as shown in other hadiths, so perhaps the silence was simply how the affirmation was expressed. And Allah knows best.It may be that Abu Hurairah, Jabir, and Abu Musa all heard this from the Prophet ﷺ in a single gathering, then went out to give people the good news, and Umar met them one after another and turned them back, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that the reason for turning them back was his fear that people would become complacent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ affirmed this. As for the idea that the incident was repeated separately with each of them at different times, this seems unlikely.
