The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every child is born upon the natural disposition. It is his parents who make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian, just as an animal gives birth to a whole offspring. Do you find any of them mutilated?"Then Abu Hurairah would say, "Recite if you wish, 'The natural disposition from Allah upon which He has created mankind. There is no altering the creation of Allah' [Rum 30:30]."
Bukhari narrated it in the book of funerals (1359), and Muslim narrated it in the book of divine decree (2658), both from the hadith of Yunus bin Yazid, from Ibn Shihab, that Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman informed him, that Abu Hurairah said (then he mentioned it).Malik narrated it in the book of funerals (53) from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it similarly, but did not mention Abu Hurairah's statement, which is "and recite, if you wish..." However, he added to it, "They said, O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about one who dies while still young? He said, Allah knows best what they would have done." This addition is not found in the narration of Ibn Shihab. This hadith was also narrated by Abdullah bin Fadl al-Hashimi, the teacher of Malik, from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Every child is born upon fitrah. Then his parents make him a Jew, or a Christian, or a Magian, just as an animal gives birth to another animal. Do you perceive any deformity in it, until you yourselves cut it off?" His narration of the hadith ends here, and he did not mention what is in Malik's narration, namely the statement "What do you say about one who dies while still young?" to the end of the hadith. This is how Ibn Shihab's narration of this hadith stands, it does not contain the statement, "What about one who dies while still young? He said, Allah knows best what they would have done." This is the end of what is found in Tamhid (18/58-59).I say, his statement ﷺ, "Allah knows best what they would have done," is found in the hadith of Zuhri, from Ata bin Yazid, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned earlier. However, it is not unlikely that Abu Hurairah mentioned this in both hadiths, as will be seen in the hadith that follows.
