I came to Ayesha and said, "Mother, narrate to me something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Birds fly according to divine decree.' And he used to be pleased by a good omen."
أتيت عائشة، فقلت: يا أمتاه، حدثيني شيئا سمعتيه من رسول الله ﷺ، فقالت: قال رسول الله ﷺ: الطير تجري بقدر. وكان يعجبه الفأل الحسن.
It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (25982) and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2161), both from the hadith of Hassan bin Ibrahim, who said, Saeed bin Masruq narrated to us, from Yusuf bin Abu Burda bin Abu Musa Ashari, from Abu Burda, and he mentioned it.Bazzar said, "We do not know of it being narrated except by Ayesha, and it has no chain except this one."Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5824), as did Hakim (1/32), who said, "The two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) used as evidence all the narrators of this hadith except Yusuf bin Abu Burda, and in my view they did not disregard him due to any criticism or weakness, but rather because his narrations were so few, for his hadith is extremely scarce."I say, this is as he said, for two narrated from this Yusuf, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (7/638), Ajli graded him reliable, Ibn Khuzayma graded his hadith sahih, and Dhahabi said in Kashif, "Reliable."So it is possible that his hadith is hasan. As for Bazzar's statement, "It has no chain except this one," this is challenged, for Tahawi narrated it in his Mushkil (2/342) with another chain, from Rabi bin Sulayman Azdi, who said, Yahya bin Maslama bin Qanab narrated to us, who said, Hassan bin Ibrahim narrated to us, from Saad bin Ibrahim, from Sufyan Thawri, from Abu Burda, who said, "Ayesha was asked, What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say about divine decree? She said, He used to say, Everything is by decree. And he liked good omens."The narrators of this chain are reliable except for Yahya bin Maslama, about whom Aqeeli (2060) said, "His hadith is not corroborated, and he has narrated objectionable reports."I say, the matter is not as he said, for Yahya bin Maslama is corroborated in the first chain.A note of caution, the chain given by Tahawi differs completely in the verified edition (5/101), and the matter needs to be confirmed.
