Some Jews said, "If this verse had been revealed about us, we would have taken that day as a festival."Umar asked, "Which verse?"They replied, "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and approved Islam as your religion" [Maidah 5:3].Umar said, "I know exactly where it was revealed. It was revealed while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing at Arafah."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4407), and Muslim in the Book of Tafsir (3017), both through Sufyan Thawri, from Qays bin Muslim, from Tariq bin Shihab, as mentioned. The wording is Bukhari's. Muslim's wording is similar, with the addition, "Sufyan said, 'I am not sure whether it was a Friday or not.'"Muslim also narrated it through Idris (that is, Ibn Yazid Awdi) and Abu Umays (that is, Utba bin Abd Allah Masudi), each transmitting separately, both from Qays bin Muslim, with the same wording. In their version it states that it was revealed on a Friday, without any doubt on their part.
