The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out one day with his head wrapped in a bandage. The Ansar, along with their women and children, came to meet him, and when he saw the faces of the Ansar he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, I love you."Then he said, "The Ansar have fulfilled what was upon them, and what remains is what is upon you. So treat their good-doers well, and overlook the faults of those among them who err."
أن رسول الله ﷺ خرج ذات يوم وهو معصوب الرأس قال: فتلقاه الأنصار، ونسائهم وأبنائهم فإذا هو بوجوه الأنصار فقال: والذي نفسي بيده إني لأحبكم وقال: إن الأنصار قد قضوا ما عليهم، وبقي ما عليكم، فأحسنوا إلى محسنهم، وتجاوزوا عن مسيئهم.
Nasai narrated it in Kubra (8270), Ahmad (13137, 12950), and Abu Yaala (3798, 3770), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (7271, 7266), all of them through routes from Humayd al-Tawil, that he heard Anas bin Malik say, and then he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.It appears in Sahih Ibn Hibban (7266) with the wording, "None of them paid attention to the faces of the Ansar that day." And his saying, "what remains is upon you," was addressed to some of the Muhajirin who were with the Prophet ﷺ at that time.
