Abu Hurayrah said, "You claim that I narrate too many hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah is the final reckoner. I was a poor man who kept close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just to fill my stomach. The Muhajirun were occupied with their trade in the markets, and the Ansar were occupied with tending to their properties. One day I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said, 'Whoever spreads out his cloak until I finish what I have to say, then gathers it up, will never forget anything he has heard from me.' So I spread out a cloak I was wearing, and by the One who sent him with the truth, I have not forgotten a single thing I heard from him."
إنكم تزعمون أن أبا هريرة يكثر الحديث على رسول الله ﷺ، والله الموعد، إني كنت امرءا مسكينا ألزم رسول الله ﷺ على ملء بطني، وكان المهاجرون يشغلهم الصفق بالأسواق، وكانت الأنصار يشغلهم القيام على أموالهم، فشهدت من رسول الله ﷺ ذات يوم، وقال: من يبسط رداءه حتى أقضي مقالتي، ثم يقبضه، فلن ينسى شيئا سمعه مني، فبسطت بردة كانت علي، فوالذي بعثه بالحق، ما نسيت شيئا سمعته منه.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Holding Fast to the Book and the Sunnah (7354), and Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2492-159), both of them by way of Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Zuhri narrated to me, that he heard it from Araj, who said, Abu Hurairah informed me, and he said, then he mentioned it. This is the wording of Bukhari, and the wording of Muslim is similar, and in it, "Whoever spreads out his garment will not forget anything he heard from me, so I spread out my garment until he finished his speech, then I gathered it to myself, and I did not forget anything I heard from him."
