I was in Medina among a group of people, including some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, when a man came whose face bore the mark of humble devotion. Some of the group said, "This is a man from the people of Paradise."He prayed two brief units of prayer, then left. I followed him, and when he entered his house, I went in too. We talked together, and once he was at ease, I said to him, "When you came in earlier, a man said such and such about you."He replied, "Glory be to Allah. No one should speak of what he does not know. I will tell you why he said that. I saw a vision during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and related it to him. I saw myself in a meadow," and he described its vastness, its grass, and its greenery, "and in the middle of the meadow stood a pillar of iron, its lower end in the ground and its upper end in the sky, with a handhold at its top. I was told, 'Climb it.' I said, 'I cannot.' Then an attendant came to me," (Ibn Awn said, the attendant means a servant) "and lifted my garments from behind," he described how the attendant raised him up from behind with his hand, "and I climbed until I reached the top of the pillar and grasped the handhold. I was told, 'Hold fast.' I woke up and the handhold was still in my grip. I related the vision to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'That meadow is Islam, that pillar is the pillar of Islam, and that handhold is the most trustworthy handhold. You will remain upon Islam until you die.'"The narrator said, the man was Abdullah bin Salam.
Bukhari narrated it in the Virtues of the Ansar (3813), and Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2484-148), both through Abdullah bin Awn, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Qays bin Abbad who said, and mentioned it.In another wording, "Abdullah will die while holding fast to the firm handhold."Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Dream Interpretation (7010), and Muslim in the Virtues of the Companions (2484-149), both through another route from Ibn Sirin who said, Qays bin Abbad said, "I was in a gathering that included Saad bin Malik and Ibn Umar." And he mentioned something similar.
