The Prophet ﷺ dispatched a military expedition and placed Usama bin Zayd in command. Some people criticized his appointment, so the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you criticize his command, you also criticized his father's command before him. By Allah, he was truly worthy of command, and he was among the dearest of people to me, and this one is among the dearest of people to me after him."
Bukhari related it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (3730), and Muslim related it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2426-63), both of them through Abdullah bin Dinar, that he heard Ibn Umar say what has already been mentioned. This is the wording of Bukhari, and the wording of Muslim is similar to it.In another wording, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while on the pulpit, 'If you criticize his command, meaning Usama bin Zayd, you have already criticized the command of his father before him. By Allah, he was indeed fit for it, and by Allah, he was among the people most beloved to me, and by Allah, this one is indeed fit for it, meaning Usama bin Zayd, and by Allah, he is among the most beloved of them to me after him. So I urge you to take care of him, for he is among your righteous ones.'"Muslim related it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2426-64) from Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Umar meaning Ibn Hamza, from Salim, from his father, who mentioned what has already been related.
