They asked, "Messenger of Allah, what we do, is it a matter already decreed, or something we are now beginning?"He replied, "It is a matter already decreed."They asked, "Then what is the point of action, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Every person is prepared for that for which he was created."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (27487) from Haytham - Abdullah bin Imam Ahmad said, "I also heard it myself from Haytham" - he said, Abu Rabi informed us, from Yunus, from Abu Idris, from Abu Darda, and he related it.Haytham is Ibn Kharija, who is trustworthy, and he has also been corroborated by others. Abu Rabi is Sulayman bin Utba Dimashqi, about whom there is disagreement. Imam Ahmad said, "I do not know him," and Yahya bin Main said, "He is nothing." Duhaym deemed him trustworthy, and Abu Hatim said, "There is no harm in him." He is praised among the people of Damascus. Haytham bin Kharija and Hisham bin Ammar both considered him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, so he does not fall below the level of "truthful." The Hafiz said the same about him and added, "He has some rare narrations."Firyabi narrated it in Qadar (38), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2138), and Hakim (2/462), and Bayhaqi in Qadha wal-Qadar (1/231), all of them from the hadith of Sulayman bin Abdul-Rahman Dimashqi, from Abu Rabi, with the same chain. This is the wording of Firyabi. From Abu Darda, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he was asked, "Do you think that what we do is something already settled, or something we initiate ourselves?" He said, "Every person is prepared for what he was created for."Then Yunus turned to Saeed bin Abdul-Aziz and said to him, "The confirmation of this hadith is in the Book of Allah ." Saeed said to him, "Explain it to me, Hilbis." He said, "Do you not hear Allah
saying in His Book, "And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared faith to you and made it pleasing in your hearts, and has made disbelief, immorality, and disobedience hateful to you. Those are the ones who are rightly guided, as a bounty from Allah and a favor..." [Hujurat 49:7–8]. Do you see, Saeed, if these people were left to themselves as the wicked say, where would they go, to what has been made beloved and pleasing to them, or to what has been made hateful and detestable to them?"The wording of the two of them is abridged. Bazzar said, "Its isnad is hasan." Hakim said, "Sahih isnad." Dhahabi criticized this, saying, "Rather, Ibn Main said, 'Sulayman bin Utba is nothing.'" I say, others have deemed him trustworthy.Ibn Abu Asim narrated it in Sunnah (246) from Hisham bin Ammar, Sulayman bin Utba narrated to us, with his chain, and its wording is, "The servant does not attain the reality of faith until he knows that whatever befell him could not have missed him, and whatever missed him could not have befallen him."Ahmad also narrated it (27490) from Haytham, who said, "Abu Rabi narrated to us with his chain," similarly.
