Abu Hurairah said, "People used to say, 'Abu Hurairah narrates too much.' I used to keep close company with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just to fill my stomach, when I ate no leavened bread, wore no fine cloth, and had no servant, neither man nor woman. I would press my belly against the pebbles from hunger, and I would ask a man to recite a verse to me, even though I already knew it, just so he would take me along and feed me.The most generous of people to the poor was Jafar bin Abu Talib. He would take us with him and feed us whatever was in his house, even bringing out for us an empty leather butter-jar, which we would split open and lick what remained inside."
إن الناس كانوا يقولون: أكثر أبو هريرة، وإني كنت ألزم رسول الله ﷺ بشبع بطني، حين لا آكل الخمير، ولا ألبس الحبير، ولا يخدمني فلان ولا فلانة، وكنت ألصق بطني بالحصباء من الجوع، وإن كنت لأستقرئ الرجل الآية، هي معي، كي ينقلب بي فيطعمني، وكان أخير الناس للمسكين جعفر بن أبي طالب، كان ينقلب بنا فيطعمنا ما كان في بيته، حتى إن كان ليخرج إلينا العكة التي ليس فيها شيء، فنشقها فنلعق ما فيها.
Bukhari narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (3708), from Ahmad bin Abu Bakr, who said, Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Dinar narrated to us, from Ibn Abu Dhib, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.Among his reports is what Abu Hurairah said, "No man ever wore sandals, put on shoes, rode mounts, or wore turbans after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was better than Jafar bin Abu Talib," meaning in generosity and nobility. Tirmidhi narrated it (3764), and Nasai in Fadail al-Sahabah (54), and Ahmad (9353), and Hakim graded it sahih (1/34, 209), all of them through the route of Khalid Haddan, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith." Ibn Hajar also graded it sahih in Isabah, in the biography of Jafar.
