Tirmidhi (3763), Abu Yaala (6464), and Hakim (3/209) all narrated it through various routes from Abdullah bin Jafar Madini, from Ala bin Abdul-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who narrated it as stated. This is the wording of Tirmidhi. The wording of the others is similar, "I saw Jafar bin Abu Talib as an angel flying with the angels, with two wings, in Paradise."Tirmidhi said afterward, "This is a rare hadith from the narration of Abu Hurairah. We do not know it except through the narration of Abdullah bin Jafar, and Yahya bin Main and others have graded him daif." Hakim graded it sahih, but Dhahabi commented on this, saying, "Madini is weak."This hadith was also narrated by Hakim in Mustadrak (3/212) through another route from Abu Hurairah, with the wording, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Jafar passed by me tonight among a company of angels, his two wings stained with blood, his heart pure and white."He narrated it from Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani, who said, Hasan bin Fadl told us, who said, Sulayman bin Harb told us, who said, Hammad bin Salama told us, from Abdullah bin Mukhtar, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and he narrated it as above. Hakim said, "This is a hadith that is sahih according to the criteria of Muslim, though neither of them recorded it."I say, its narrators are reliable except for Abdullah bin Mukhtar, who was deemed reliable by Ibn Main, Nasai, Ibn Hibban, and others, while Abu Hatim said, "There is no harm in him." With these two routes, the hadith rises to the level of hasan.
