When the Prophet ﷺ finished the battle of Hunayn, he dispatched Abu Amir at the head of an army to Awtas. There he encountered Durayd bin al-Simma. Durayd was killed and Allah routed his companions.Abu Musa said, "He sent me along with Abu Amir. Abu Amir was struck in the knee by an arrow shot by a man from the Jusham tribe, which lodged in his knee. I came up to him and said, 'Uncle, who shot you?'He pointed to a particular man and said, 'That one is my killer, the one who shot me.'So I made for him and caught up with him. When he saw me, he turned to flee, and I pursued him, calling out, 'Have you no shame? Will you not stand and fight?' He stopped, and we exchanged two strokes with the sword, and I killed him. Then I said to Abu Amir, 'Allah has killed the man who struck you.'He said, 'Pull out this arrow.' I pulled it out, and water flowed from the wound. He said, 'Nephew, convey my greetings to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him to ask forgiveness for me.' Abu Amir appointed me as his successor in command over the men. He lingered a little while, then died.I returned and came to the Prophet ﷺ in his house. He was on a rope-bed without a mattress, and the rope had left its marks on his back and sides. I informed him of our news and the news of Abu Amir, and I said, 'He told me to ask you to pray for forgiveness for him.'The Prophet ﷺ called for water, performed ablution, then raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, forgive Ubayd Abu Amir.' I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said, 'O Allah, on the Day of Resurrection place him above many of Your creatures among mankind.'I said, 'And for me too, ask forgiveness.'He said, 'O Allah, forgive Abdullah bin Qays his sin, and admit him on the Day of Resurrection through a noble entrance.'"Abu Burda said, "One of the two supplications was for Abu Amir, and the other was for Abu Musa."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4323), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2498), both from Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin Ala, who narrated from Abu Usama, from Burayd bin Abdullah, from Abu Burda, from his father Abu Musa Ashari, who said, then he mentioned it.His statement, "He pointed to Abu Musa and said, 'That is the one who killed me, the one who struck me.'" This means he said to Abu Musa, pointing to the killer, "That is the one who killed me, the one who struck me."
